What is autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (also called Autism) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a child behaves, communicates, and connects with others. Children with autism may:

  • Find it hard to make eye contact or talk to others.

  • Repeat certain actions (like flapping hands or lining up toys).

  • Prefer routines and get upset with small changes.

There are several reasons why the autism unemployment rate is so high, including a lack of understanding and accommodations from employers, challenges in the hiring process, and stereotypes and misconceptions about individuals with autism.

According to the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, a staggering 3% (4.2 crore) of the population is estimated to be on the autism spectrum in India. Factors like low awareness, lack of basic facilities and improper diagnosis, among others, have contributed to a staggering increase in autism cases in the country.
